Vitamin E, also known as the "vitamin of youth", is involved in many important processes in the human body. Although the daily requirement for vitamin E is rather small, its deficiency may result in serious ailments.

Vitamin E is a group of compounds known as tocopherols. Along with vitamins A, D and K, they belong to the group of fat-soluble vitamins. This means that they are stored in the body (and not excreted in the urine or sweat like water-soluble vitamins), mainly in adipose tissue and the adrenal glands.

In addition, the body's absorption of the "vitamin of youth" is supported by other vitamins such as vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, manganese, selenium, phosphorus and essential fatty acids.

It is worth knowing that there are various chemical forms of vitamin E available on the market:

  • D-alpha-tocopherol,
  • DL-alpha-tocopherol,
  • D-alpha-tocopheryl acetate,
  • DL-alpha-tocopheryl acetate,
  • D-alpha-tocopheryl succinate

The compounds starting with DL are synthetic (artificial) forms of vitamin E obtained by chemical means.

Compounds starting with D come from natural sources.

Only a well-balanced diet fully satisfies the body's needs for vitamin E. Unfortunately, in times of ubiquitous highly processed food, excessive work activity, and often stressful situations, it is difficult to provide the body with the necessary amounts of this valuable vitamin. According to specialists from the Food and Nutrition Institute, the daily requirement for vitamin E is varied and depends, among others, on on age, sex and physiological condition.

The main symptoms of vitamin E deficiency may be: impaired concentration, skeletal muscle activity, anaemia, infertility, premature skin aging, and cardiovascular disease. It is worth emphasizing that vitamin E deficiency is common in: women taking birth control pills, people smoking cigarettes, people with Bassen-Kornzweig syndrome, patients with cystic fibrosis or celiac disease.

Reasonable supplementation (294 mg daily, equivalent to 400 IU) helps the body maintain the proper level of vitamin E.
