What is 5-HTP and what are its properties?

5-HTP or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a naturally occurring amino acid derived from tryptophan. It is a direct precursor of serotonin, i.e. a neurotransmitter necessary for the proper functioning of the nervous system. 5-HTP is also an indirect precursor of melatonin, a substance called the sleep hormone.
