D-mannose is a six-carbon simple sugar that occurs naturally in the human body, as well as in some plants and fruits. Mannose is deceptively similar in its structure to glucose. However, the subtle differences in the spatial configuration of both compounds mean that they have different properties.

Unlike glucose, which is absorbed quickly and directly, mannose must first be converted to fructose and then to glucose. As a result, mannose induces a much weaker insulin response, has a low glycemic index and has minimal effect on blood sugar levels.
